baby science!
Mar. 17th, 2008 03:06 pmThis week in Bonzo: 40 weeks old! He's now an old hand at the extrauterine life. Our friends have just harvested the spring crop of babies (four births in the last three weeks) and it's mind-boggling to realize that to them, Bonzo is the Big Kid, just as Leo was to us long ago. It's just crazy.
Last week the small one had a fever for most of the week, so we kept him home from baby school and wrote off or tag-teamed our work responsibilities. Bonzo also got to hang out with my godfather, which was great fun for me (though I think they might have made each other tired in the couple hours I jaunted off to work!). I have some good pictures of them, though it might be a while before I put things together enough to post anything.
We finally got a new kitchen table to replace our lovely-but-unstable antique one, and had people over on Saturday night to test it out. (It flies great.) We also ordered a cabinet that will be a little more secure and are starting to think about babyproofing seriously. We're lucky that Bonzo is giving us as long as he is to become mobile.
In brief, here's what he's up to.
Likes: The glowy green, blue, and red lights on various kitchen and electronic appliances. The tinny music on his various electronic toys (thanks, Grandmama.) Cell phones and remote controls. Waving at anything that moves, or at glowy lights.
Dislikes: diaper changes. Sleep. Alone time. Anyone who tries to remove anything from his hands for any reason.
Eating: Milk! More milk! More more more! At dinnertime, he's also sampling veggies and fruits. His favorites are "garden vegetables" (spinach/peas/carrots) and bananas. Also squash, carrots, applesauce, and sweet potato. Are we having a growth spurt?
Not eating: Grumpios. Orange slices. Cooked broccoli. Bread. He loooooves the feel of these things, and loves to squish them on his high chair tray, and has totally mastered the pincer grip. But he's not in the habit of putting small items in his mouth. This stands him in good stead on the floor, but it means that we've stalled out a little on food introduction.
Trying: crawling using only the power of his elbows and brain. Standing with support.
Playing: Godzilla (knocking over stacks of blocks), Laundry Peekaboo, "CARRY ME!", and Drop & Lunge.
Sleeping: Fitfully. We had three golden nights of solid sleep after his last illness, and last night we hit another jag where he cried for forty minutes. This is unprecedented for him. Teething?
Learning: to give hugs and cling like a monkey. He has gone back to eating my chin after a few weeks off, and I think this may be the beta test of the open-mouth toddler kiss. He's also learning gravity and friction! (Things slide down an incline, plastic things slide faster, mushy things don't.) He plays taking-turns games with his dad, and likes to steal my hats and then giggle about it.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, y'all.
