okay, maybe I'm paranoid

Sarah Palin has heard lots of pundits and joe sixpacks debating whether she is qualified to be "a heartbeat away" from the presidency--it's in all the papers she reads. During the debate last night she didn't do anything that made me stand up and say, "Wow, that was presidential." Surely she knows, deep in her heart, that she doesn't currently have the experience for this job.
What if she doesn't care? I watched her give a "shout-out" (oh, please) to a bunch of Alaskan third graders towards the end of the debate, and realized that quite possibly she expects not to win and is riding that chance. What if she's merely setting herself up for a presidential bid in twelve or sixteen years? What if she's buying herself name recognition in groups that won't remember or won't care about her fluffy George-esque speeches by the time they've fully tuned into politics? And what if she's actively doing so at the expense of her running mate, a long-serving national Republican leader with deeply held convictions?
Put in those terms, the wink is not adorable. It is slightly grotesque.
