This list is for my own reference, mostly.

Last Saturday: We are all sick, but we head out to the Field Museum to show Elwood some maps and show Bonzo a zebra. The real, life-size member of Team Stripey was about four feet tall! That's a Zebra! The maps were good, but I thought I was about to croak.

Sunday: Spiritual growth at church. Really.

Monday: the crib arrives! Yay, crib!

Tuesday: The dark night of the week. In the morning, the furnace dies. Elwood is still sick, I am yet sicker, and Bonzo is still not sleeping. We discover that crucial players at this naming thing are not coming out to Chicago. I finally bail on this whole "lemon-and-honey" treatment and go for antibiotics on my cold.

Wednesday: We wake up with Bonzo's OTHER ear bloody, and wail for a while before figuring out that the genius baby just scratched himself hard waking up. D'oh. I work my only full day of the week.

Thursday: I am sicker than ever. We stay home. I take Bonzo to the baby doc, and like a mommy who just don't care, I let him get his six-month vaccines. Because he's seven-and-a-half months old, people! And we need some vaccines on board when we have to drop him off every day at the germ pool! I begin piling the guilt on myself immediately, but he begins to turn the corner that night.

The best part of Thursday was taking out the garbage. I dragged the garbage bag down with Bonzo and the diaper bag out to the car, and as we leave, seven or eight young men roll out from the apartment building across the street, looking for trouble at 1:30 in the afternoon. They are supposed to be in school, but they're obviously up to mischief and real proud of themselves 'cause they can swear. As I'm loading Bonzo into the car seat and they're all passing my car, one of them stops and says, "That your garbage, ma'am? I'll take it. Over there, right?" and hauls it out to the dumpster for me. Awwww. I was so touched and thankful that I didn't call the truant officer on them.

Friday: Mom arrives and immediately teaches Bonzo how to high-five. It is absolutely adorable.

Saturday: Dad arrives. Despite the cold, we manage to leave long enough for the ritual sushi dinner.

Sunday: Bonzo has his naming/baby dedication at church! He is totally adorable, we manage to say all our lines, and our minister, God bless him, manages to say just the right thing at the last minute. There's lovely brunch and lots of chat. I will have to write more about this, but at the moment I will just say that it was good and I was touched by all the family and friends supporting us.

Monday: We journey to the magical land of Costco. (Would you believe you can get mayonnaise by the gallon? I didn't.) We say goodbye to Grandmama, which is always really difficult. Bonzo waves to someone all by himself at the store. (This kid really loves a crowd, or a camera. I really think we may be missing out by not shopping him to ad agencies.) He also has figured out this evening how to put things inside other things, like blocks inside a cup, and is just going to town on it. He's a smart kid, and patient, and delighted by all manner of things. I like him quite a lot.

I learned quite a bit this week too. I feel like I'm slowly getting stronger, even though it's taking me months to get through what some people manage to pick up in a few weeks. Next week I plan to actually go to work, and maybe I can power through the short days until it gets light again.
