There's new Mimi. Though short, this post really resonates with me. Not that I actually have a toddler. Or nosebleeds. Or fear of ped v. car crashes. But it's me, anyway. You just have to squint real hard.
I think I just woke up a sleeping pro-choicer this morning. I explained the situation in S. Dakota, and her eyes got big and her mouth dropped open and she said, "But that's illegal!" Yeah, lady, that's why they're doing it. She hadn't heard anything about the most recent challenge, and she was appalled. THOSE are the people we need to mobilize. I'm thinking about bringing her over a primer the next time we meet, but I don't want anything too overtly political. I'm not recruiting a full-time activist, just an aware voter. (I sketched out the "PB"AB as well, but she was a little confused and I dropped it.) Suggestions on where to go next?
And, whee! Overtly religious abstinence-only program gets defunded by US government. I should point out that I began this quasi-political/educational puzzler of a career back in college, where I volunteered for an abstinence-only program. I'm not opposed to them on principle, I'm just really freaked out by the lack of facts or objectivity in most of today's abstinence-only curricula. The S. Ring Thing is one of the most gratuitously shame-based, fear-based programs out there, and I'm so glad it's being cut.
