Hurdle 1: Bridal Showers by Strangers
Feb. 5th, 2004 11:32 pmOkay, no panic here.
Craig and I sit down to watch a movie. His cell rings with a strange number. I convince him to pick up. Turns out it's an old friend of his late mother--ET--who has called, out of the blue, for the first time in several years. She has gotten wind of the wedding. Wants to congratulate him. AND WANTS TO THROW ME A BRIDAL SHOWER with all of his mother's friends. Being Craig, he offered to let her talk to me. (sigh) Now, she was a very sweet and friendly person and explained how it would have meant a lot to C's mom. I understand this. And because she was so sweet and friendly, I could not bring myself to laugh derisively and hang up the phone. I said that it would be wonderful to meet them all. Now, privately, I REALLY don't want five crock pots and lots of extra wedding invitations to send (which, according to all my bride books, is traditional after someone has attended a shower?). She senses my hesitation and says that she will give me some time to think it over and she will email me so that I can easily reply at my leisure. She ALREADY HAS MY EMAIL ADDRESS. Craig's brother gave it to her. And then, with impeccable boy logic, did not consider it important enough to warn me.
We hang up and immediately redbird calls (how did she know?) and reassures me that these are very nice people and it is a sweet gesture and I'm by no means required. She even offered to go with me to ease my terror. I'm just a little nervous about meeting them, the same way I would be nervous about meeting Craig's mother after I had already decided to become his wife. It's like meeting six--OR MORE--future mothers-in-law after figuring I would never have to experience that, for better or worse.
Yike. Ack. Gasp. I should go pick out some thank you notes already.
