Did anyone else hear the report on fetal cells on NPR on Wednesday? Short summary: women who have been pregnant retain fetal cells up to 40 to 50 years after pregnancy. Theory 1 says that this may inflame auto-immune disorders. Theory 2 says that they may provide some immune benefit. I'm intrigued and icked by this idea, in the same way that molar pregnancies and chimera cells kind of make me shudder. I'm also irritated that NPR--even NPR!!--is romanticizing this immediately.
