It should have been a really simple computer replacement: backup the files, unplug the cords, plug in the new computer, load the apps, replace the files. But for some reason my blinkin' scanner won't scan. It's a tempermental little tart anyway, and could probably use an update or a cleaning or just a little TLC from someone who knows what zie's doing. But it's not getting any of those things, and it won't scan my assessments. I need those assessments. (Not until summer, mind you, but I still need them.) So was it the amateur file replacement? The re-loading of the applications? Some physical change in the plugging and unplugging and cleaning? I don't know. I'm at the point where I need to spend many hours alone with the computer until it talks to me (the only way I ever figure out these issues), but the very helpful and dedicated techie wants to be methodical and ask me lots of questions. I know more concepts than nouns with this system, so I can't seem to explain to him what feels wrong. And now I have to go drop my taxes at the post office, so I can't stay and obsess for a few hours. Must go home. Damn.
On the bright side, I found a treasure in the office today. A brand-new version of the old, battered flip chart I've been using for the last three years. It was leaned up against "my" computer (the one I use here at Remote Office) so I can only assume someone bought it for me. Heh. Must take victories where I can find them.
