I have a complaint with the recent addition to the roadside advertisements on 90/94 eastbound. There are several lovely views on this highway, particularly as one rounds the corner and heads past the mural building just before the Armitage exit. In the last few weeks, however, there has appeared a blue-and-red neon sign that traces the words "Miller Lite" and the little swoosh beneath them. It's bright, the light is in motion, and it completely ruins the lovely Chicago skyline. On sunny days it's possible to block out the advertisement. However, this is particularly annoying when one is stuck in traffic or when it's cloudy and gloomy, because then you get the !!NEON SIGN!! in front of a fairly ominous, shadowed skyline. This is not good marketing. This makes me want to drink Miller Lite even less than I used to (which, admittedly, I never did). A pox on Miller Lite and its big neon sign.
My grandfather is doing much, much better. Should be out of the hospital today or tomorrow.
Some good things about the week:
KNITTY! The new winter issue of Knitty is up. It's safe to say that I want to make EVERY pattern in this issue RIGHT NOW--particularly the penguin. As I'm entirely enmeshed in this blinkin' blanket project, the penguin may have to wait. But soon, my pretty, soon.
BUFFY! I've been up way too late the last couple days with the S7 DVDs, and they are fascinating. I love this season but am also disappointed in it. I don't agree with a lot of their choices on the story arc, and I wish that they had made time to develop more character in the Potentials instead of treating them like a flock of geese. However, "Buffy" set higher and higher goals for the series each season it was on (with the exception of S4, which I love but cannot respect) and I feel like S7 was better than any of the ones before--and also finally brushing the limits of the genre. They tried to come full circle and do it bigger and better than ever, and they partly achieved it. But not totally.
